Description

We manufacture custom annular die sets to your specifications. You can select your required inner diameter (ID) and outer diameter (OD) of the ring pellet, as well as the sleeve height and material. All other components will be manufactured to match these dimensions.

All of our annular die sets are custom-made, as we rarely produce the same OD and ID combination twice. The die set operates similarly to our standard pellet press dies, with the addition of a central pin that creates a ring-shaped cavity.

The central pin fits inside the base plate, while the spacers and plunger are designed with holes to accommodate it. During pressing, there is no direct force applied to the central pin, so it remains stationary. After pressing, the base plate is removed, and a specially designed ejection pin is used to remove the central pin. Once removed, the ring-shaped pellet can be extracted in the same way as with our standard die sets.

Included with your custom annular (ring) die set

  • 1x Die sleeve
  • 1x Plunger rod
  • 1x Plunger extractor
  • 1x Central pin
  • 2x Ring shaped spacers
  • 1x Base plate
  • 1x Aluminium release ring with cutout for viewing pellet during release
  • 1x Additional release ring for removing long central pin

Custom specifications

The die set will be manufactured according to the drawings provided, with the following custom parameters:

  • Inner diameter (ID) of the ring: as specified
  • Outer diameter (OD) of the ring: as specified
  • Die sleeve outer diameter: 30 mm larger than the ID
  • Die sleeve height: as specified
  • Material: D2 tool steel/440C Stainless Steel

Notes relating to your custom order

  • Manufacturing lead time is approximately 6 weeks, plus delivery. We will contact you within 48 hours if we have any questions.

  • If you would like to modify your design (e.g. additional plunger, thermocouple holes, different OD), please complete the form here and we will provide a quote separately.

  • We are unable to advise on the maximum force for custom die sets. Please refer to our standard products for guidance and carry out your own stress calculations before purchase.

  •

Internal components are ground to high tolerances (±0.0002 inch) to ensure smooth and precise operation.

Material

D2 Tool Steel (60–62 HRC): D2 tool steel is heat-treated for high hardness and strength (up to 80,000 psi). It offers excellent wear resistance, toughness, and surface finish, making it ideal for most laboratory materials.

Please note:

  • This material should not be heated due to its heat treatment.
  • It may rust if left wet, but surface rust can be easily removed.

440C Stainless Steel (58–60 HRC):  440C stainless steel is an excellent choice where corrosion resistance is important. It offers high hardness and good wear resistance after heat treatment, making it suitable for a wide range of laboratory applications, particularly when working with materials that may introduce moisture or require easier cleaning.

While slightly less tough than D2 tool steel, 440C provides a good balance of strength, hardness, and corrosion resistance. It also maintains a smooth surface finish, which helps with pellet release and reduces material sticking in many applications.

Please note:

  • This material offers strong corrosion resistance but is not fully rust-proof and should still be properly cleaned and dried after use.
  • It can be heated up to approximately 250 °C (480 °F); However, prolonged or excessive heating may affect hardness and performance.
  • It is generally preferred for applications where cleanliness and resistance to oxidation are priorities.
