Die Set Specifications
Yield Strength Hardened Steel | 60,000 psi (550 MPa) |
Recommended max loading @ 50 % | 30,000 psi (275 MPa) |
Recommended max force | 1250 lb (0.6 ton, 5500 N) |
Typical force for quality pellets | 220-660 lb (0.01-0.3 ton 1-3.2 kN) |
Die sleeve cutout | 6x6 mm (0.24 inch) |
Die sleeve height | 40 mm (1.57 inch) |
Die sleeve outer diameter | 45 mm (1.77 inch) |
Assembled height with spacers (w/o powder)* | 89 mm (3.5 inch) |
Assembled height no spacers (w/o powder)* | 73 mm (2.87 inch) |
Recommended max force = Is the maximum force you can put the die set under. This includes a 50% safety margin which is industry standard.
Typical force for quality pellets = This is the range we recommend using that will get you a great pellet and is much less than the recommended max force.

Description
Pellet Die set for making 6x6 mm (~1/4 x 1/4 inch) square pellets from powders.
With your die set order we’ll include:
- Die sleeve
- Plunger rod
- 2 x spacers
- Base plate
- Aluminium release ring with cutout for viewing pellet during release
6x6 mm Square Pellets Dies have a range of applications. The 6x6 mm (1/4 x 1/4 inch) Pellet Dies require a relatively small amount of material to make a pellet compared to the larger opening dies.
The relatively small area of the die sets means that high stresses can be reached with minimal applied stress. Always check the required loading first to not exceed the strength of the die set. Whilst dies steels are chosen for tolerating high stresses and pellet dies are heat treated fro superior properties, you can easily exceed even these high yield strengths with a hydraulic press with a few pumps of the handle. The diameter is small enough that pressing force can be applied manually with a lever press or arbor press. Take it easy and make sure students and interns are aware of the same!

Materials
Hardened tool steel (Rockwell hardness >C60) polished to a high tolerance fit.
Die made of hardened tool steel (Rockwell hardness >C60) for long lasting trouble free performance. Sleeve is polished to high tolerances to allow the hardened tool steel plunger to slide through perfectly. Plunger and spacers are made from high yield strength steel, machined and polished to high tolerance for the perfect fit. Interior surfaces ground to mirror-like finish.
For square die sets we use wire EDM which is a slow process but cuts very accurately. This is different from the circular die sets. The polishing of all corners/edges also takes more time to achieve the high level of finish

Pressing Loads
Safety
- Always wear googles and safety protection equipment.
- Always press using a safety guard.
- Do not apply pressure above what is shown on table above.
- Make sure the plunger is fully engaged before pressing.
- More force does not always mean better pellets.
- Increasing with a higher force increases the chance of breakage.
Shipping and Returns
Most of the common die sizes are in stock in both our US and UK warehouses and we aim to have shipped out within 24-48 hours.
Free Die Set Shipping USA, UK, Canada and EU: Shipping is offered free across the USA, UK, Canada and EU for all die sets.
