High Strength Heat Treated Steel
1/4 inch (6.35mm) Pellets Dies have a range of applications. The 1/4 inch Pellet Dies require a relatively small amount of material to make a pellet compared to the larger diameter dies. 1/4 inch pellet dies are also commonly used for making KBr pellets for FTIR analysis, in which small quantities of powders are mixed with Infrared-transparent KBr (Potassium Bromide) powder before pressing into a pellet and transferring into the FTIR.
1/4 inch die sets require relatively small loads to apply huge stresses so always make sure you stay safe and stay below the max loading force of the pellet die set. Higher compressive stresses to not necessarily make better pellets. With the application of a few tons you can reach 100 000 psi within the die. Whilst dies steels are chosen for tolerating high stresses and pellet dies are heat teated fro superior properties, you can easily exceed even these high yield strengths with a hydraulic press with a few pumps of the handle. The diameter is small enough that pressing force can be applied manually with a lever press or arbor press. Take is easy and make sure students and interns are aware of the same!
This die is made of hardened D2 tool steel (Rockwell hardness >C60) for long lasting trouble free performance. The sleeve is polished to high tolerances to allow the hardened tool steel plunger to slide through perfectly. Plunger and spacers are made from high yield strength steel, machined and polished to high tolerance for the perfect fit. Interior surfaces ground to mirror-like finish.
Video is of the 6mm Pellet Press Die Set. The 1/4 inch is identical to this (with a 1/4 inch inner diameter).
